Leading Teams: Building Effective Team Cultures

In this foundational course, I immersed myself in the idea of building effective team cultures. I explored different facets of team culture that were at the root of effective teams. I learned more about cultures of safety, engagement, and growth, so that I could lead my teams toward cultures that facilitated the most effective teamwork.

Organizations are complex and can be difficult to manage well, so I needed tools to help me better understand and deal with the many complexities and challenges associated with organizational life. In this course, I learned theories, principles, and frameworks that helped me design more effective organizations. In this course, I learned how organizations create, capture, and maintain value, developing an understanding of why this process is fundamental for sustainable competitive advantage. I gained insights into value creation and capture and learned tools to analyze competition and cooperation from multiple perspectives, including both industry-level frameworks like five forces analysis and firm-level strategies such as business models and strategic positioning. I also understood how managers coordinate various functional areas, resources, and systems within a company and align them with the external environment to enhance overall performance. Ultimately, I was able to recognize and apply strategic management tools in real business contexts, process diverse information to diagnose strategic issues, evaluate alternatives, and formulate coherent, actionable strategic plans.

In this course, I learned how corporations create, capture, and maintain value from a corporate-level perspective, which goes beyond managing a single business unit. I developed an understanding of how corporations make strategic decisions regarding multiple businesses and stakeholders, such as vertical integration, diversification, mergers and acquisitions, strategic alliances, international expansion, global strategy, corporate governance, and corporate social responsibility. I learned tools and frameworks to assess corporate scope, corporate transactions, and global strategy and to analyze complex business situations and formulate coherent corporate strategies. Additionally, I gained insights into the role of corporate governance and stakeholder management in modern companies.

The capstone was a strategic leadership and management plan where I applied what I had learned to an actual business situation involving one or more focal companies. The deliverable was designed to create value from the perspective of potential employers while achieving pedagogical and experiential goals for me as a learner.
